With exception to a detour to Texas for high school and college, John has spent the majority of his life in California, and most of that outdoors hiking, biking, surfing, snowboarding, rafting, camping, etc.
In the Fall of 2018, John was diagnosed with stage 1 bladder cancer and fought hard to beat it within a year, only to have it come back again in 2020. While some were fighting covid, he was battling cancer. A year later he was cancer free and has remained since. He credits his treatment and lifestyle changes ( a vegan who no longer consumes alcohol) for saving him physically, but credits endurance cycling for saving him mentally. The more miles I put into a ride, the more clarity I have on the totality of my existence.
John and Bill have been good friends since they were sophomores in high school in Bryan/College Station, Texas. Last summer on a visit to California for some epic San Francisco Bay Area riding, Bill floated the idea of doing a two person team RAAM in 2024. When John heard Bill wanted to do so for Disabled American Veterans, he was hooked. John’s dad was a heavily decorated Navy Vietnam Combat Veteran who returned from the war physically and emotionally wounded. John has profound respect for veterans and is deeply honored to be part of this.
John has lived in San Francisco CA for the last 24 years. He is married to his high school sweetheart Samantha, and has two kids Josh(20) and Sydney(16).
Fun Fact: On the crew you will find Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran, Don Miller (aka Coach). Don was John and Bill’s high school basketball coach.
